This year, For Freedoms has launched the largest creative collaboration in our nation's history, the 50 State Initiative. From September to November of 2018, concurrent decentralized public events across the country will reflect a multiplicity of voices and spark a national dialogue about art, education, commerce, and politics.
Justin's work featuring the phrase "WE ARE THE ASTEROID" is part of this 50 States initiative and featured in Oklahoma City, OK at the intersection of I-40 & S May Ave.
The phrase "WE ARE THE ASTEROID" comes from philosopher Timothy Morton, Professor and Rita Shea Guffey Chair in English at Rice University. Morton, considered one of the most important ecological voices in writing today, is the author of HYPEROBJECTS: Philosophy and Ecology after the End of the World (Minnesota, 2013) among numerous other publications. His work explores the intersection of object-oriented thought and ecological studies. See his website here.
The billboard is sponsored by 21C Museum Hotel Oklahoma City which is a contemporary art museum and 135-room boutique hotel.
More about For Freedoms:
For Freedoms outdoor activations invites artists to use the tools of art and advertising to encourage civic engagement. We believe that if artists’ voices replace advertising across the country, public discourse will become more nuanced.
Inspired by American artist Norman Rockwell’s paintings of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Four Freedoms (1941)—freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear—For Freedoms Federation uses art to encourage and deepen public explorations of freedom in the 21st century.
